Botfly in Bolivia Statistics

Here's an article(pdf) discussing the statistics of several Israelis who traveled to the Amazon Basin of Bolivia. There were 12 patients studied who traveled between 1994 and 1999. The stats include gender, age, country of exposure, affected area on body, and the method used to remove the botfly.

Interesting. I was in Rurrenebaque, Bolivia last Novermber, 2007 and similarly became host to a bot fly larvae in my lower back. It took me 5 weeks to realize that the antibiotics were of no effect, and after a few cleaning/squeezing attempts, I noticed a small white lump that I managed to take hold of with my finger and extract without much of a problem. At that moment I realized that it was a living organism. I'm 20 years old from the United States, and recommend travelling to the Bolivian jungle despite the chance of being host to a bot fly larvae. It's really not all that bad in the end and makes a great story.
